Air Liquide - GreenMotionSteel (DE33)
Air Liquide is a world leader in gases, technologies and services for industry and healthcare. Present in 60 countries with approximately 66,500 employees, the Group serves more than 4 million customers and patients. Oxygen, nitrogen and hydrogen are essential small molecules for life, matter and energy. They embody Air Liquide’s scientific territory and have been at the core of the Group’s activities since its creation in 1902. Taking action today while preparing the future is at the heart of Air Liquide’s strategy.
Air Liquide intends to build a 120 MW water electrolysis plant for the production of renewable hydrogen at the Marl Chemical Park in the Emscher-Lippe region. The aim of the GreenMotionSteel project is to support the development of a European hydrogen infrastructure by supplying the European hydrogen market with renewable hydrogen, while at the same time promoting the regional development of a value chain for renewable hydrogen in the Rhine-Ruhr region.
The annual production of up to 18,400 tonnes of renewable hydrogen would be a key building block for the decarbonisation in key sectors such as steel, chemicals, refining and mobility. Compared to conventional hydrogen production, GreenMotionSteel would enable greenhouse gas reductions of up to 249,000 tonnes of CO2 per year.
The renewable hydrogen produced will be fed into the European hydrogen backbone as well as into Air Liquide's existing long-distance H2 pipeline in the Rhine-Ruhr region to support the decarbonisation in the aforementioned key sectors. Potential customers could also be supplied via trailer, for example for mobility applications or remote usages of hydrogen.
PEM electrolysers from Siemens Energy have been selected for the project. The partnership between Air Liquide and Siemens Energy will combine the operational and plant design experience of Air Liquide with the experience in design and manufacturing of electrolysers of Siemens Energy.
