HGHH – Hamburg Green Hydrogen Hub (DE45)
Hamburg Green Hydrogen Hub (HGHH) (DE45)
Luxcara and Hamburger Energiewerke have joined forces to realise the Hamburg Green Hydrogen Hub project, short HGHH. The project will be executed by the joint venture Hamburg Green Hydrogen GmbH & Co. KG. The competences of the two partners are complementary: Luxcara is a leading independent asset manager with proven expertise in clean energy infrastructure projects and brings extensive experience in long-term renewable power purchase agreements. Hamburger Energiewerke is a municipal company and covers the entire energy supply value chain – it will phase out heat generation from coal by 2030 and the heat supply will be climate-neutral by 2045.
Main project objective is to develop, construct and operate a 100 MW electrolysis plant with an annual green hydrogen production capacity of up to 15,000 tonnes per year. Pipeline connection will be realised via the local hydrogen grid HH-WIN (DE23) and its connection to the European Hydrogen Backbone (Hyperlink, DE40). The project also involves the installation of a trailer loading station for transport of green hydrogen to third parties without access to hydrogen pipeline infrastructure in the surroundings of Hamburg. HGHH benefits from the advantage of the location of a former coal fired power plant. The envisaged sustainable approach will transform a fossil fuel energy production site into a Green Hydrogen Hub.
The electrolyser will be located in Hamburg-Moorburg, Germany. The former power plant site offers for instance the reuse of an existing 380 kV power supply, technical equipment like water treatment and office buildings. With its location in the heart of the port of Hamburg, the HGHH project can make a significant contribution to decarbonise Hamburg’s port economy and the industries based there.
Testing and start of commercial operation is planned in 2027.
