HydroHub Fenne (DE54)

The HydroHub Fenne GmbH is a limited liability company which is seated in St. Johanner Straße 101-105, 66115 Saarbrücken, Germany. As a wholly-owned subsidiary of Iqony Energies GmbH which is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Iqony GmbH which in turn is a wholly-owned subsidiary of STEAG GmbH, HydroHub Fenne GmbH will be part of the STEAG group.

The project DE54 HydroHub Fenne is a brownfield approach to build a 50-55 MWel PEM electrolyser at the location of a hard coal plant site in Völklingen-Fenne (Germany). It is the first big step in the transition of this site towards a renewable energy hub. The plant site also offers the opportunity to use the by-products of the electrolysis, such as oxygen and waste heat, to implement sector coupling – e.g. by using the waste heat to sponsor the already existing district heating network.

The electrolysis plant will be connected to an open and non-discriminatory hydrogen network which is part of the IPCEI H2 Hy2Infra (Creos, DE28) and will deliver the renewable hydrogen to multiple offtakers in the region. The construction will begin in 2025, and the plant will be operational by third quarter of 2027, depending on the exact coordination with the IPCEI project partners. The local hydrogen network will also act as an anchor for a connection to the European Hydrogen Backbone (EHB) in the medium to long term.
