Apulia Green Hydrogen Valley Project (IT49)

The IT49 project is under development by a special purpose vehicle Puglia Green Hydrogen Valley - PGHyV Srl (the SPV”) established in 2021. The SPV’s quotaholders are:

  • Edison SpA [1] (50%) - the oldest energy company in Europe, with more than 140 years of achievements, and it is an industrial leader in Italy at the forefront of the energy transition. Edison is an integrated company: from energy production to sales to end customers, from gas supply and green gas development to energy market and environmental services.

  • Sosteneo Fund 1 HoldCo S. à r.L [2] (40%) - investment vehicle for the Sosteneo Energy Transition Fund, managed by Sosteneo SGR S.p.A., a specialist manager of greenfield infrastructure projects related to the energy transition. Sosteneo was established in 2022 by four founding partners alongside Generali Investments Holding and received regulatory authorisation from the Bank of Italy in 2023.

  • Saipem SpA [3] (10%) - a leading global solution provider that performs engineering, procurement, construction and project management in the energy and infrastructure sector.

The SPV objective is to develop, construct and operate the IT49 Project which foresees the construction of two green hydrogen production plants in Apulia region (South Italy), in Brindisi (60 MW) and Taranto (100 MW), with an expected annual production of c.ca 260M Nm3 per year. The electrolysers will be powered by renewable energy produced by dedicated renewable plants (developed and operated either directly by the SPV or by Edison Group), integrated by renewable energy made available through the electric grid via PPAs with third suppliers.

The IT49 green hydrogen production will be made available to off-takers mainly through a dedicated H2 network under development by Snam (IPCEI Hy2Infra project code IT21), contributing to the decarbonization of the nearby industrial districts of Brindisi and Taranto (incl. energy intensive industries such as a steel-making plant and refineries), combining several H2 applications into an integrated H2 ecosystem.

The project execution will last about 4 years and is currently scheduled to go operative in 2028.
