Eustream – H2I-TR (SK04)
H2I-TR (SK04)
Eustream is the sole operator of the large-scale, high-pressure transmission system in the Slovak Republic. Its primary mission is to ensure the safe, reliable, environmentally sustainable, and efficient gas transmission to European markets. Eustream’s transmission system in Slovakia represents an important east-west and north-south energy connection. This robust system is interconnected with the primary transmission routes in Ukraine, Hungary, Austria, the Czech Republic and Poland. This corridor plays a critical role in connecting the western, central and southern regions of the European continent. Additionally, Eustream is the sole promoter of the H2I-TR project.
The H2I-TR project involves repurposing a 500 km long natural gas pipeline and constructing 2 new compressor stations for cross-border transmission of hydrogen (H2) of high-grade purity. The H2 pipeline will extend from the Ukrainian border to borders with Czechia and Austria. Eustream’s pipeline will pave the way not only for H2 imports from Ukraine, North Africa and the Balkans, but also for the creation of a bi-directional interconnection between the EU and Ukraine. The repurposed pipeline will have a capacity of up to 9.1 GWh/h / 2.02 Mt H2/y at the Ukrainian border and up to 6 GWh/h / 1.33 Mt H2/y at both the Czech and Austrian borders. Additionally, H2 infrastructure is also expected to be interconnected via a local distribution network with intrastate off-takers in industrial, mobility, and energy sectors aligning with decarbonisation goals set forth by national and international policies, thus contributing to the reduction of GHG emissions and fostering a sustainable energy transition.
The project will repurpose one pipeline stretching among points at the Ukrainian border - Interconnection Point (IP) Ruská, the Czech border - IP Lanžhot and the Austrian border - IP Baumgarten. One of the compressor stations will be located close to the Ukrainian border and the other one in western Slovakia, close to the gas node in Plavecký Peter. Commissioning depends on the market development of H2, with operation planned after 2030, contingent upon regulatory approvals and technological advancements. The H2 infrastructure also has a potential for future connectivity with Hungarian and Polish H2 networks.
