AquaDuctus

AquaDuctus will be a gigawatt-scale hydrogen pipeline with a transport capacity of up to 20 Gigawatt. The AquaDuctus project consists of an offshore part in the German Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) of the North Sea and an onshore part for integration into the downstream onshore hydrogen pipeline network. AquaDuctus provides an open and non-discriminatory network access to multiple network users.

The project will connect large quantities of green hydrogen produced in the North Sea with mainland Europe and the emerging onshore hydrogen infrastructure. AquaDuctus will be an integral part of an interconnected offshore hydrogen network in the North Sea that connects Germany with its North Sea neighbours. In this way, European production and demand centres for green hydrogen will be connected.

In the first section of the project, AquaDuctus will connect the first large-scale hydrogen wind farm site SEN-1 with a generation capacity of around one gigawatt. SEN-1 is located in the German Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) northwest of the island of Helgoland. A 200-kilometer offshore pipeline will transport the green hydrogen obtained from the SEN-1 site to German mainland at the area of Wilhelmshaven. From there on a 100-kilometer onshore pipeline to Bunde located at the Dutch-German boarder will secure connection to the downstream European consumers.

In the second section of the project, the offshore pipeline will be extended by another 200-kilometers. AquaDuctus will then reach to the edge of the German EEZ and in this way open up the possibility of connecting further hydrogen wind farm sites as well as connecting with neighbouring offshore hydrogen infrastructures from Norway, Denmark, the Netherlands, Belgium or the United Kingdom.

The AquaDuctus Pipeline GmbH is an affiliate of GASCADE Gastransport GmbH. GASCADE independently operates a Germany-wide gas pipeline network connecting five European countries. Based in Kassel, the company offers its customers state-of-the-art and competitive transport services for hydrogen and other gases in the heart of Europe via the company’s own high-pressure pipeline network, which is around 3,700 kilometres long.

GASCADE is pursuing the goal of converting its transmission network to the transport of hydrogen and is therefore active in several specific onshore and offshore hydrogen projects.
