The project Hyperlink, with its sub-sections 1 and 2 (IPCEI scope), is executed by Gasunie Deutschland Transport Services GmbH, a subsidiary of N.V. Nederlandse Gasunie.

Gasunie is a leading energy infrastructure company in Europe. In the Netherlands and the northern part of Germany, the company manages and maintains a 17,000 km long pipeline network for large-scale transport and storage and storage facilities for natural gas and green gases. In this position, Gasunie is also one of the leading companies for the development of a European transport infrastructure for hydrogen.

Gasunie believes it is time to accelerate the energy transition and sees a decisive role for hydrogen in decarbonisation and maintaining the competitiveness of the European industry.

It is Gasunie’s objective to enable the development of a liquid hydrogen market in northern Germany by providing open access, non-discriminatory transmission services for large scale hydrogen producers and off-takers in the region. In addition, by establishing cross border connections with the Netherlands and Denmark, Gasunie aims to proactively facilitate the EU internal hydrogen market.

With Hyperlink, Gasunie is realising a pioneering project for the hydrogen infrastructure in north-west Germany. The planned hydrogen network and Hyperlink 1-2 especially are largely based on the conversion of existing natural gas pipelines - a resource-saving solution that enables us to put parts of Hyperlink into operation quickly. Moreover, Gasunie ensures the continued value and public benefit of existing infrastructure as much as possible. It also comes with the by-product to allow Gasunie to continue building on the experience and competences in the development, management and operation of critical gas infrastructure developed over the last decades. In doing so Gasunie has a public concern and wants to become an active player in the future energy system.

The Hyperlink 1-2 project will result in a hydrogen pipeline system of approximately 400 km length.

The Hyperlink 1 and 2 sub-projects concern the hydrogen pipeline system running from the Dutch hydrogen network Hynetwork to the greater Hamburg and Salzgitter regions. The section of pipeline running from the German – Dutch Border (interconnection point Oude) via the Bremen region to Leversen in the area of Hamburg is a central element of the Hyperlink system and is called Hyperlink 1. Hyperlink 1 will facilitate connections to a significant number of relevant hydrogen producers, gas storages (Nüttermoor, Jemgum, Huntorf) and consumers as early as the end of 2027. Hyperlink 2 will connect Hyperlink 1 with the steelworks in Salzgitter and the ONTRAS hydrogen network and will become operational by End of 2029.
