Clean Hydrogen Coastline H2 Infrastructure (DE07)

Gastransport Nord GmbH (GTG) operates and markets 400 kilometers of high-pressure gas transmission pipelines in northwestern Lower Saxony. As a wholly owned subsidiary of EWE AG, GTG transports domestically produced and imported gas to connected network operators, storage facilities, and major consumers within the supply corridor between East Frisia and Bremen.

The joint project “Clean Hydrogen Coastline H2-Infrastructure” (CHC - H2I) has the objective to realise hydrogen infrastructure in northwest Germany. The individual project of GTG is part of the consortium-type project structure “Clean Hydrogen Coastline” (CHC), which represents the total hydrogen value chain including hydrogen production, transport, and storage. GTG plans the infrastructural connection of the electrolyser being built in Emden (EWE HYDROGEN, DE43A) and the H2 cavern storage facility in Huntorf (EWE GASSPEICHER, DE43B) to the H2 infrastructure of Gasunie. The focus here is on the use or conversion of transport pipelines of the existing natural gas pipelines while maintaining the security of supply of natural gas customers.

The CHC – H2-Infrastructure project of GTG has the primary objective of realising functional, high-quality, and cost-effective hydrogen pipelines as part of the German H2 Kernnetz.

A total of 29 kilometers of existing natural gas pipelines will be converted, and an additional 29 kilometers of hydrogen pipelines will be newly constructed. As part of the integrated Hy2Infra project the green hydrogen produced in Emden can be transported to the H2 customer. By integrating the gas storage facility in Huntorf, hydrogen can be stored temporarily, thus decoupling H2 production and H2 offtake.

Work on the CHC-H2-Infrastructure project started in the first quarter of 2024 and will be completed in 2027. The total duration of the project will be approximately 3.5 years.
