Hamburger Energienetze – Hamburg Hydrogen Industry Grid (DE23)
Hamburger Energienetze GmbH is a municipal company owned by the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg. It was created in September 2024 through the merger of Stromnetz Hamburg GmbH and Gasnetz Hamburg GmbH. With around 2,300 employees, the company provides households and commercial customers with electricity, gas, and hydrogen in a sustainable and secure manner.
The electricity grid extends over nearly 30,500 kilometers. Each year, more than 10 TWh of electricity flow through the network. The company supplies over 1.4 million customers with electricity and natural gas. The gas grid covers about 7,850 kilometers and delivers around 15 TWh of gas annually to some 230,000 households and businesses.
At the same time, through the “Hamburg Hydrogen Industry Grid” (HH-WIN) project, Hamburger Energienetze is ensuring a future-proof energy supply for industry in the port. Initially planned to be around 40 kilometers in length, the network will already supply major industrial companies with green hydrogen by 2027. By 2031 it will expand to 60 kilometers. The infrastructure is being developed where demand is greatest and where the climate protection benefits are highest. By directly connecting energy-intensive industries, HH-WIN makes a significant contribution to industrial decarbonization and supports Hamburg on its path to becoming a climate-neutral metropolis.
Launched in 2022, the project covers the entire hydrogen value chain: from electrolysis powered by renewable electricity to imports by ship and onward use in metal production, the chemical industry, port logistics, and transport. The hydrogen infrastructure in the Port of Hamburg will be linked to the supraregional European Hydrogen Backbone (IPCEI HyPerLink, DE40) as well as to the local 100 MW electrolyzer (DE45). The pipelines operate at a nominal pressure of 25 to 70 bar.
