Ontras – doing hydrogen (DE61)
doing hydrogen
At the backbone of a functioning hydrogen economy lies a transport system that connects hydrogen import points or producers and consumers and ensures access to potential storage facilities. With its ONTRAS hydrogen network (ONTRAS H2-Startnetz), ONTRAS is laying the foundation for effective and efficient hydrogen infrastructure in Eastern Germany. ONTRAS operates the 7,700-kilometre long pipeline network in eastern Germany and is responsible for the reliable and efficient transport of gaseous energy - today and in the future. ONTRAS is actively shaping the development of a German hydrogen network, integrated into the European hydrogen infrastructure.
As part of the ONTRAS H2-Startnetz, doing hydrogen will create a comprehensive transportation system that connects projects of innovative H2 producers and large-scale consumers. Thus, it will link to major import and production sites for eastern Germany with consumption centres. Beyond that, doing hydrogen will also be important for other players in the eastern German hydrogen economy: with a total of over 300 kilometres of hydrogen pipelines, connections will be created between the economic regions of central Germany and the greater Berlin area as well as the industrial location of Eisenhüttenstadt. Furthermore, it will form a high-performance hub in the federal states of Brandenburg, Berlin, Saxony and Saxony-Anhalt. In addition, connections to the future core H2 network, the European Hydrogen Backbone, the Nordic Baltic Hydrogen Corridoras well as to storage facilities ensure a high level of flexibility and secure supply.
For these reasons, doing hydrogen as well as Green Octopus Mitteldeutschland (GO!) were designated as Important Projects of Common European Interest (IPCEI) by the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action. Together they form the core of the ONTRAS H2-Startnetz with a total length of 600 kilometres. Commissioning will take place from 2028.
