Snam - H2 Valley Puglia (IT21)
H2 Valley Puglia (IT21)
The project IT21 – H2 Valley Puglia is promoted by Snam Rete Gas S.p.A, a subsidiary of Snam S.p.A. (acronym for Società Nazionale Metanodotti) (Italy), a company operating mainly in the transport, storage and regasification of natural gas. Snam is the leading European operator in natural gas transport, and comprehensively manages 40,000 kilometers of pipeline, encompassing both its operations within Italy and those conducted abroad through its participation in foreign Transmission System Operators (TSOs). Snam promotes the use of fully decarbonised gases like biomethane, bio-LNG, and hydrogen.
The project aims to establish a hydrogen transport infrastructure, linking planned hydrogen generation sites in Apulia (IT49 by SAIPEM and Edison, and IT02 by Energie Salentine) to key end-user districts, primarily in the steelmaking, refining and chemical sectors. In particular, the project involves the realisation and operation of a hydrogen transport pipeline (up to 94.5 kt per year capacity) from the Brindisi area to the Taranto area. This includes a) the repurposing of the Palagiano - Brindisi natural gas pipeline (about 78 km length) and part of the pipeline towards Brindisi (about 7 km) to transport hydrogen, b) construction of pipeline connections to enable the injection of hydrogen from the partner projects’ production sites (about 11 km), and c) construction of a new pipeline to serve the Taranto industrial area (about 12 km).
The project will be located in Apulia (Italy), between Brindisi and Taranto, and should enter into operation by 2028.
The aid granting agreement between Snam Rete Gas and Member State's aid granting authority has been signed in August 2025.
