VNG Gasspeicher – GO! Storage VGS (DE18)
GO! Storage VGS (DE18)
The project GO! Storage VGS (DE18) is executed by the VNG Gasspeicher GmbH. VNG Gasspeicher GmbH (VGS) is Germany’s third-largest storage operator with 50 years of experience in creating and operating underground storage facilities. VGS is a fully owned subsidiary of the VNG AG in Leipzig and offering currently 2.3 billion cubic meters of capacity in 4 locations with connectivity to all of Europe’s most important trading markets.
The objective of DE18 is to construct an underground salt cavern for use as a large-scale hydrogen cavern storage facility next to existing storage caverns in Bad Lauchstädt, Saxony-Anhalt. This storage will allow a balancing of hydrogen offer from variable regenerative energy sources and demand. Also, industries requiring secure supply will be encouraged to switch to hydrogen as feedstock. DE18 will offer a working gas volume of 50m Nm³ and injection / withdrawal rates of 40,000 / 100,000 Nm³ per hour. Storage services can be booked by e.g. industrial customers or by hydrogen traders.
The cavern will be located in Bad Lauchstädt in Germany. The project construction will begin in 2025, with storage fully operational in early 2029.
