HyPowerDrive (DE50)

The HyPowerDrive project is executed by BMW AG, the world’s leading premium manufacturer of automobiles and motorcycles, as well as provider of premium financial and mobility services. The company’s production network comprises 31 production and assembly facilities in 15 countries. The overarching goal for the BMW Group is to satisfy all mobility requirements of its worldwide customers. For zero-emission passenger vehicles, BMW aspires the co-existence of battery electric and fuel cell electric vehicles, depending on the customer specific needs. Offering two complementary fully electric options can increase the customer acceptance and accelerate the transformation to zero-emission mobility.

The objective of the HyPowerDrive project is to develop an innovative powertrain for fuel cell electric vehicles and make hydrogen-based individual mobility economically viable in the future. Main targets are to enhance cost and system efficiency, performance, functional integration and the robust operation at all product lifecycle stages for the complete powertrain system and its integration in the vehicle. The project investigates the entire value chain and includes development, prototyping, validation, testing and analysis, as well as its production process design.

Collaborating with qualified development partners and scientific organisations on challenging automotive industry requirements (e.g. cost, weight and size), it is expected to drive the technological progress for systems and components and enhance economy of scale beyond the sector. Additionally, BMW supports efforts to build the required HRS network, the production and supply chain for green hydrogen at a competitive price.

The project development activities take mainly place in Europe, with the heart of these activities and its coordination located in Munich. Similarly, the full planning and preparation of the series production is coordinated mainly from Munich.
