GIGAFACTORY HIGH POWER FUEL CELL (FR27)
Hydrogène de France SA (HDF Energy) is a French SME founded in 2012 and headquartered in the Bordeaux region. HDF is a global pioneer in the development and operation of large-scale hydrogen infrastructure and advanced multi‑MW fuel cell technology, including its proprietary Renewstable® and HyPower® systems. With a multicultural team of over 150 hydrogen specialists spanning more than 35 nationalities and active across Europe, Latin America, the Caribbean, Africa, the Middle East, and Asia-Pacific, HDF aligns its R&D&I with industrial markets to reduce the cost and increase the deployment of fuel cell systems.
The main objective of the "GIGAFACTORY HIGH POWER FUEL CELL" project is the industrial deployment of megawatt-scale fuel cell (FC) and hydrogen (H₂) technologies. The project aims to decarbonise heavy mobility and industrial applications – particularly in the maritime and railway sectors – through the development of a European multi-MW FC gigafactory. HDF seeks to design and produce fuel cell systems with high efficiency, durability, and availability, surpassing the current state of the art and meeting the demanding requirements of maritime and rail markets, with potential for future aerospace use. The product roadmap spans a broad power range, from modular 1–2 MW systems to 10 MW integrated units, and includes the development of fuel cell stacks above 500 kW for integration into those systems.
The project is located in Bordeaux, France. HDF’s factory will be built on a former Ford industrial site, contributing to the region’s reindustrialisation. A dedicated testing center will also be established on-site. The project officially commenced on 24 October 2022. The Research & Development (R&D) and First Industrial Deployment (FID) phases are expected to be completed by the end of 2029. The three product lines are planned to reach their respective FID milestones between December 2026 and December 2029.
