Get insights into the levelised cost of hydrogen production by technology in Europe in 2022.

This datastream provides data on the levelized cost of hydrogen per country split between CAPEX and OPEX for

  1. Steam Methane Reforming (SMR)
  2. SMR with carbon capture
  3. Grid-connected electrolysis
  4. Water electrolysis with a direct connection to a renewable energy source (renewable hydrogen)

Reference year is 2022.

Notes

  • Greece, Bulgaria and Portugal have introduced short-term measures to mitigate the impact of high electricity prices on industry. These measures take the form of negative taxes.
  • The various sources used for calculating the LCOH, include among others:
    • European Network of Transmission System Operators for wholsale electricity costs in various EU Member States
    • ENSPRESO model from the Joint Research Centre for solar PV, onshore and offshore wind capacity factors in EU Member States
    • IRENA’s Renewable power Generation Costs in 2022 - for CAPEX and O&M costs for solar PV, onshore and offshore wind in Europe
    • Clean Hydrogen JU Strategic Research and Innovation Agenda for electrolyser efficiency, stack durability, stack degradation and O&M costs
    • IEA Global Hydrogen Review 2022 and Bloomberg New Energy Finance hydrogen LCOH analysis for 2H 2022 for electrolysis CAPEX estimates
    • Eurostat statiscial data for 2022 covering electricity and natural gas costs (costs of energy as well as taxes and grid fees) for non-household consumer.
