The German government has unveiled a draft law that would impose new mandates on the proportion of transport fuel that must be made using green hydrogen annually up to 2040.

The EU’s most recent Renewable Energy Directive (RED III) mandates that at least 1% of all transport fuel used in the EU must be RFNBO (renewable fuels of non-biological origin – ie, green hydrogen and its derivatives) by 2030, and sets no targets beyond that date.

But the draft bill unveiled by the Federal Ministry of Environment, Climate Action, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety, which has been drawn up to transpose RED III transport rules into German law, includes a new set of targets to increase the proportion of RFNBO in transport fuel each year up to 2040.
